Retired: Wes Brown does best

Capello won his battle to persuade Jermain Defoe to delay a groin operation after the Spurs striker played last Saturday, while the striker’s team-mate, Peter Crouch, has been recalled although there is some concern over ripped muscles in his back. He is thought to be a severe doubt for Friday’s match but is also set to remain in the squad because he should be fit by next week.England had hoped to include the 24-year-old Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale, but he injured an ankle at Blackpool on Saturday and it is now feared he may be out for up to 10 weeks. This could have serious ramifications for Fulham who were considering making him their number one goalkeeper, with Mark Schwarzer still expected to depart to Arsenal.Robert Green will also undergo an operation and his omission is being managed in conjunction with the Football Association, although West Ham are confident that the goalkeeper will be fit in time for their next league match. Capello has also been denied the chance to include the injured Fulham forward Bobby Zamora, leading to a reprieve for Carlton Cole. There has been much debate over the exclusion of Joe Cole but the manager simply regards Adam Johnson and Ashley Young
